20 December 2009

All hail the winter solstice!

I'm very excited that tomorrow is the winter solstice for 2009. One brief moment on this day the 21st of December 2009 marks the beginning of longer days and shorter nights.

Above is a beautiful photo I found on flickr of a winter solstice celebration at Stonehenge.

I lived in Alaska for 20 years. Winter solstice made me want to do cartwheels. I was so tired of the darkness. I was also happy about summer solstice because I could put the kids to bed right after dinner (5 o'clock) and they didn't know the difference. It was dark by 3:oo. Darkness was my friend.

Wow--it must have been incredible to live in Alaska. I'm not sure I could do it. I welcome the solstice SO MUCH because I know it is the beginning of the end of the short days. I love summer, when it's light forever. MCM, you're eloquent!
